  2. Kippah
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kippah

A kippah (/kɪˈpɑː/, /kiˈpɑː/); also spelled as kippa, kipa, kipah; Hebrew: כִּיפָּה‎, plural: כִּיפּוֹת‎ kippot; Yiddish: קאפל‎ koppel), or yarmulke (/ˈjɑːrməlkə/, sound pronunciation /ˈjɑːməkə/, Yiddish: יאַרמולקע‎), is a brimless cap, usually made of cloth, traditionally worn by Jewish males to fulfill the customary requirement that the head be covered. It is worn by men in Orthodox communities at all times. Among non-Orthodox communities most people who wear them customarily do so only during prayer, while attending a synagogue or in other rituals. Most synagogues and Jewish funeral services keep a ready supply of kippot.

    Etymology

The term kippah (Hebrew: כיפה‎) literally means “dome”, as the kippah is worn on the head like a dome. The Yiddish term yarmulke might be derived from Polish jarmułka,[1] although it is often associated with an Aramaic phrase (ירא מלכא) meaning “fear the King”.[2] Another suggested etymology of yarmulke is the Latin word for an ecclesiastical hood worn in the medieval church.[3][specify]

Keppel or koppel is another Yiddish term for the same thing.[4]

Este purtat de bărbați în comunitățile ortodoxe în orice moment. Printre comunitățile neortodoxe, majoritatea oamenilor care le poartă obișnuit fac acest lucru numai în timpul rugăciunii sau al altor ritualuri, inclusiv unele femei. Majoritatea sinagogilor și serviciilor funerare evreiești păstrează o ofertă gata de kippot.

    Yarmulke
    https://newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Yarmulke

A ‘yarmulke (Hebrew: יאַרמלקע meaning “cap”) is a thin, slightly-rounded skullcap traditionally worn by Orthodox Jewish men, although some men and women in the egalitarian Conservative and Reform movements also wear it during services. Wearing a Yarmulke is described as “honoring God.”[1] According to the Talmud, a Jewish man is required to cover his head during prayer.[2] The Yarmulke has become identified as a symbol of Judaism over the last century. It is also known as a kippah (Hebrew: כִּפָּה kippa, plural kippot .קאַפּעלע kapele.)

Many religions imbue clothing with religious significance as a sign of respect before God. Religious vestments convey the message that daily practice requires purity and cleanliness as well as constant remembrance of the divine’s blessings and commandments.

    Etymology

The word yarmulke is a Yiddish word, deriving from the Polish jarmułka, meaning “cap”. The popular claims that it comes from an Aramaic phrase yari malka, meaning “fear of the King [i.e., God]”, or from the Hebrew ya’are me-elohim, “to tremble beneath the Lord”, are both without evidence. The popularity of these folk etymologies probably owes to the idea that the yarmulke is a tribute to God, an interpretation that resonates with Jews.

In Hebrew, kippah means “dome.” The Goth word kappel (cf. Chapel) still exists in the Yiddish term today. The equivalent of the Hebrew word is the French calotte and the Italian calotta, both meaning an architectural dome.

Kippah means “dome” in Hebrew. (In fact, in the talmud, it means “prison”, because at the time, prisons had domed roofs.) So a kippah is a skullcap.

Yarmulke is a Yiddish word borrowed from the Slavic which in turn borrowed from the Turkic. It means “cap” and refers to whatever kind of cap the local commoners wore.

There is a popular folk-etymology that claims “yarmulke” comes from the Aramaic “yarei Malka – fear/awe of the King.” Which is indeed why they are worn; in emulation of the kohanim, the priests serving in the Temple, who were obligated to cover their heads in humility before the Creator. And I wonder if it isn’t this folk etymology that pushed the word into the Yiddish lexicon, and gave it the widespread use it has today.

Another Yiddish term for a head covering is “kapl”, from the Yiddish (and German) word “kop”, head.

Nowadays, since male Jews tend to cover their head with kippot (pl.), both words mean skullcap. “Kippah” tends to be more used in communities whose Jewish identity is more tied to Israel than to Yiddish.

But there are other traditional head coverings that were in their day called yarmulke. Such as the high cantorial yarmulkes like

And in Lithuania, a cap like this one worn in the US by R Moshe Feinstein was the typical yarmulke

These are yarmulkes, but since they aren’t dome-shaped skullcaps, they are not kippot. Although Rav Moshe probably called his a “kapl”.

There is no difference. These are words in two different languages for the same thing.

Yarmulke רמלקע is a Yiddish word, borrowed from Polish or Ukrainian word jarmułka (“skullcap”). It’s possibly from the Turkish word yağmurluk (“rainwear”). The word first came into English around 1903. NOTE: there is folk etymology that Yarmulke comes from the Hebrew phrase meaning “fear of a king” or “Awe of a king” but there is no evidence for this. Some of the other answers on here even use that as the meaning. “Awe of a king” in Hebrew is Yir’at melech (מלך את) so there are some similar sounds, but that’s about it.

Kippah is a Hebrew word that means “dome” or “hood”.

Usage and pronunciation notes: Non-Orthodox Jews and younger Jews tend to use Kippah more often than Yarmulke. In the US, Yarmulke is often pronounced “Yamaka” because Yiddish is a non-rhotic language, and this non-rhoticity is often borrowed along with the word when used in American English.

I remember at my oldest son’s bar mitzvah, a non-Jewish friend asked, “What do the red caps mean? Are they worn by the important people?” It was funny because the yarmulkes were in a basket in the lobby, and you were welcome to use one if you didn’t have one of your own. Some of them had soccer ball patterns and “Go Giants” on them:
as long as your head is covered, and the covering is not made of pig-flesh or shellfish, you’re just fine.

Same situation here: two names for the same thing, makes no difference. “kipa” is Hebrew and “yarmulke” is Yiddish, perhaps derived from the phrase, “Yah Melech” – “God is King”.

    Hope this answers your question.

    …. Yarmulke or Kippah?….

    None.

Yarmulke is a Tartar word;” (In) Awe of King.

The Tartar wore it out of respect for their Kings 24/7.

The converted Khazar of King Bulan in 740BC having adopted it earlier wove it into Judaism.

Khazar would come to Europe in the 12th CAD hoping to do what the Crusaders were doing in Palestine, but upon seeing the ’Schools’ in German Towns called Ashkenazim & underwent admixture & miscegenation with German Jewry.

The Yarmulke was unknown in ancient Peleset/Palestine rename after 332BC by the Macedonians, later Syria Palestina by the Romans in 63BC.

The great expulsion of Portugal & Spain in 1492AD saw them introduce the Yarmulke into Palestinei ,ME & North Africa, where it was also accepted.

Essentially they are the same thing…a skullcap representing Jewish piety.

The use of these terms themselves, however is significant. A modern orthodox person is more likely to use the word “kipa,” whereas someone who identifies as Satmar, Bobover, or Lubuvitch, for example, might be more likely to use the term “yarmulke.” The former would probably wear a “kipa s’ruga,” while the latter would be more likely to wear a somewhat different style.

What kind of head-covering you wear can indicate your religious orientation. The issue also speaks to degree of religiosity. Reform Jews may not wear a kipa at all.

Conservative Jews often wear a kipa while praying, but rarely wear a kipa all day long.

More traditional Jews put on the kipa in the morning and don’t take it off until they go to sleep at night.

    Hope this helps.

In reality, they are one and the same.

The word “kippah” is Hebrew for “dome”. So it is used in many other connotations besides the “Yarmulka” skullcap. The term Yarmulka is a contraction of the term “Yarei malka” which means a symbol of “fear (or reverence) of the King.” You may consider it a nickname for the type of “dome” that we wear.

It’s a little like the difference between “fowl” and Chicken. One is more generic and the other more specific.

Kippah is Hebrew and Yarmulke is Yiddish.

Sorry, but that is it. On the other hand men have styles that only one group or another wear. Gur Hasidim have a special cut to their black Kippahs only they wear and Modern Orthodox women and girls will crochet Kippahs for their boys/brothers/husbands/loved ones in a verity of colors and patterns.

So the name isn’t import, but which kind of material and how the kippah is made is.
